Five Tips to Building a Neutral Wardrobe

If you do not already know, I am in love with neutrals. My wardrobe is growing with neutrals and my house is filling up with neutral decor. The reason I love neutrals is because soft shades appeal to me and I think they are great colors that can be worn all year round. Neutrals do not appear on the color wheel so they technically do not follow the same rules that true colors follow because they do not clash with each other. So whether you mix and match neutral colors or go monochromatic, it will look great. Sticking to one theme can be tough because when you go into a store, you may find a ton of things you like but when you come home with them, you realize they are all different styles and colors. At the same time, you also do not want your wardrobe to look dull and have everything look the same. Today I am going to list some tips to creating a neutral wardrobe you will love and not have to say 'I have so many clothes but nothing to wear' in the morning.

As a friendly reminder, I know we are all continuing to face this global pandemic with concern but I hope this can ease some of your minds and give you a distraction while we stay at home. Maybe it will inspire you to organize your wardrobe!

What colors are considered neutral?

  • Neutrals are black, grey, camel, beige, cream, ivory, white, and all shades in between those colors. So when you are shopping, try to focus on those colors.

Stock up on neutral basics.

  • Basics include your white tees, black denims, grey sweaters, etc. Your basics are usually the foundation of your look. They should not be too busy in terms of textures, patterns, or prints. They should be just one plain neutral color. It is good to have multiples of basics because they are your fundamentals so you will be putting them to good use constantly.

Find good quality neutral statement pieces.

  • Once you have built up your basics, now comes the fun part where you can begin choosing unique pieces. It is still important to stick to neutral colors and it is okay to invest a little more in these pieces because they are going to be the stars that complete your outfit. Some good examples are a camel trench coat, a beige or black designer bag, a pair of white sneakers, etc.

Style a monochromatic look with similar neutral shades.

  • When going for a monochromatic look, it is okay if each piece is not the same exact shade. As long as you are focused on sticking to either light neutral colors or dark neutral colors, you can match similar shades and even mix textures. Therefore, if I want to style an all white outfit, I can do a white cotton t-shirt and white denim pants with a cream colored long coat and beige leather bag.

Keep it simple.

  • Having a neutral style is often quite minimalist so keep it clean and avoid busy patterns or prints.

P.S. I know I am no expert in fashion nor do I have a fashion degree but these are my opinions are tips and I hope you find them useful. =)
